ABSTRACT

Reported numbers underestimate the true occurrence of pediatric AIDS: There is underreporting or delay in reporting because infected children ofthen have nonspecific signs and symptoms that may not meet the CDC surveillance case definition for pediatric AIDS. Infants and children under 13 years of age with AIDS currently account for abou 2 percent of all reported ADIS cases in the United States. Although this proportion is still small, the number of pediatric cases is growing rapidly due to increasing numbers of infected women who are transmitting HIV to their newborns
